Introduction

West of Moscow, December 1941

Description

*As the Germans approached Moscow in 1941, there was tremendous interest in seizing any secret Soviet technology that may be stumbled upon.

In October the general order was given to Russian technological concerns to relocate east of the Ural Mountains for protection from German bombers.  Miraculously, production numbers increased within 2 months of the relocation!   Still, there were some stragglers who remained in Moscow .

*Alexander Sergeevich Yakovlev, the principle designer of the Russian YAK-1 fighter plane, was one of those stragglers.  German intelligence had placed him in the area west of Moscow.

*Assault on the Academy is a recreation of the mad dash to save Yakovlev, and the Russian Fighter Aircraft program!

*NOTE: This is a fictional composite of historical events.

    Victory Conditions:

The Russians win a Tactical Victory if they control the Classroom Building at game end.  The Russians win a Total Victory if they control the Classroom Building and can escort A.S. Yakovlev off the North, South, or Eastern table edge.

The Germans win a Tactical Victory if they control the Classroom Building at game end.  The Germans win a Total Victory if they control the Classroom Building and can capture A.S. Yakovlev and escort him off the Western or Southern board edge.

Turn Record:

Special Rules:

1.      Night rules are in effect.

2.      The Scenario Master assumes the roll of A.S. Yakovlev.  Yakovlev starts the game in the Classroom Building .  During each rally phase the          Scenario Master rolls a 6 sided die for A. S. Yakovlev.  A roll of 1 or 2 means that Yakovlev, if not yet under escort, must move.  Roll a 4 sided die to determine the direction (1-N, 2-S, 3-E, 4-W).

3.      Yakovlev must be escorted by an unbroken squad or leader (not a vehicle).

4.      Any squad not within Night Visibility Range (NVR) of a friendly leader receives a -2 DRM on all Fire and Morale rolls, and movement is halved.

5.    All Players roll a 6 sided die to determine entry point.

6.      All players roll a 6 sided die to determine which turn they must enter.  The German players get a -1 DRM on this roll.  All vehicles get a +2 on this roll.  Modifiers are cumulative.  The Russian T-34 may set up on the table with an unmodified roll of 1.

7.      All players roll 2 6 sided dice to determine the number of Starshells they have.

8.      All players plot their route of approach to the Classroom Building prior to Turn 1.  The Scenario Master determines where the first contract of enemy forces occurs, and begins Turn 1 at that point.

Aftermath:

A.S. Yakovlev was responsible for developing the improved YAK-3 fighter which dominated the skies over Eastern Europe at the end of the war.
